November Update from COCSD: Project Momentum Initiative

We’re excited to share updates on the impactful work underway this fall in Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District. Through our participation in the Arizona Department of Education’s Project Momentum, we’re adding valuable resources and tools to further strengthen the outstanding teaching and learning already happening across our schools. This initiative builds on the dedication and expertise of our high-quality staff, providing additional support to elevate student achievement. We are deeply thankful for the hard work and commitment of our teachers, whose dedication to student success makes all the difference every day.

In-Depth Standards Training
With Project Momentum, our teachers have been working to “unwrap” academic standards, breaking down complex goals into clear, actionable steps for students. This training supports the thoughtful planning and high standards our staff already maintain, further enhancing the quality of instruction for each student.

Student Thinking Routines
Our teachers are also integrating specific thinking routines to help students engage more deeply with their learning. These routines encourage critical thinking, guiding students to analyze, question, and connect ideas across subjects. We’re thrilled to see how these routines are becoming a meaningful part of students’ daily learning, helping them build skills that last a lifetime.

Dedicated Weekly Planning
Thanks to Project Momentum, we have dedicated weekly planning time for our teachers, which enables them to collaborate, refine lessons, and respond to students’ unique learning needs. This dedicated time enhances the thoughtful planning our staff already emphasizes, giving teachers even more support to deliver high-quality instruction.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
Our teachers are meeting regularly in Professional Learning Communities to review student data, discuss strategies, and address challenges as a team. These collaborative sessions strengthen our commitment to serving each student effectively, and we’re grateful for the dedication and expertise our staff brings to this work.

As we enter the Thanksgiving season, I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt thanks to our families and community for your ongoing support and partnership. Your involvement helps us create an environment where our students can thrive. Project Momentum is helping us build on the great work our teachers do every day, and together, we are creating a stronger learning environment for every student. Wishing you all a joyful and restful Thanksgiving season!
