The Stewart B. McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Assistance Act protects the rights of all homeless students. The Act describes a homeless student as one who:

  • Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or

    a similar reason,

  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of

    alternative adequate accommodations,

  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters; or are abandoned in hospitals

  • Have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for

or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings,

  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus

or train stations, or similar settings, or

  • Is a migratory child who qualifies as homeless for the purposes of this subtitle

because the children are living in circumstances described above.

Students categorized as homeless/transitional according to the Stewart B. McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Assistance Act participate in this program. Students are identified by the Homeless Liaison through referrals made by district employees, community members, city agency employees or self-referrals. The Homeless Liaison assists in immediately enrolling these students in school, identifying and providing assistance to meet their academic and non academic needs, and ensuring that barriers to education are eliminated.

If you are experiencing a loss of housing due to an economic hardship there are laws in place to assure that your child has access to a free public education. If you have questions or feel you may qualify, please call Lauri Squier, District Level McKinney-Vento Student Liaison 928-634-2288.
