COCSD Camps: Building Skills, Confidence, and Lifelong Memories

Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District is excited to offer students unique and engaging experiences during school breaks. From Winter Camp to Spring Break Bike Camp and our popular summer program, Camp Innovation, these opportunities give students a chance to learn, build confidence, and have fun outside the classroom.

This winter, 5th–8th graders will head to Mingus Mountain for the 2nd Annual Winter Camp, themed “Mining the Mountain: Digging to Discover Ourselves and How We Matter.” Campers will work as a mining crew, focusing on teamwork while exploring who they are and how they can support each other. Activities will include archery, gold panning, obstacle courses, winter activities, fire building, geocaching, and compass reading.

In March, we are offering a free Spring Break Bike Camp from March 17-20 for a select group of dedicated mountain bikers. Run by Sedona Mountain Bike Academy, along with local coaches from Verde Valley Wheel Fun and COCSD 21st CCLC, students will sharpen their riding skills, boost their confidence, and make new friends. Each day will focus on different techniques, from foundational skills to navigating a bike park. A mandatory parent Zoom meeting will be held on March 10 at 6:00 PM to review details and transportation plans.

Our summer program, Camp Innovation, has continued to grow, offering a mix of academics and hands-on learning. Last year, 225 students participated, with 94% maintaining or improving in math and 97% doing the same in reading. Students explored STEM, engaged in outdoor activities, and had a blast while continuing to learn. Parents appreciated the full-day schedule, and staff were eager to return, making it clear this program is a community favorite.

These camps are part of our district’s commitment to keeping students engaged year-round. Whether they’re developing leadership skills at Winter Camp, hitting the trails in the spring, or exploring new ideas at Camp Innovation, students will leave with new skills, great memories, and a stronger connection to their community. We encourage COCSD families to take advantage of these free and enriching opportunities.

Stay tuned for summer registration details, and we look forward to seeing our students at camp!

Warm Regards,

Jessica Vocca, Superintendent
